After a distinguished career in the corporate world, in an exciting and stimulating industry, my 50th birthday loomed and it became clear to me that whilst I had always earned a excellent salaries my retirement plan would fall well short of supporting my current lifestyle. In life we have choices and I had chosen to ignore my age in relation to financial planning. Having no desire to drop my standard of living it was time to work smarter not harder.

I did not have the confidence to risk my small reserves in the stock market. My late father had always believed in bricks and mortar as an avenue for wealth generation and I realized I needed to find out the best way I could follow his example. A friend took me to a residential property seminar that was so logical and clear that a light bulb went on in my head and I saw the possibility of acquiring enough assets to be comfortable in retirement. When 80% of Australia’s retired population exists on $12,000 or less income per year I was determined not to be counted in those statistics.

I started my property purchases in 2003 and using tried and tested residential property investment principles immediately saw the benefits of asset growth. Investors have followed the principles, acquiring wealth through property, for centuries and neither I nor anyone have a patent on the method. It is a logical and with the correct research and information my property purchases increased yearly using the passive income I had achieved through the increase in my property values. I now have seven investment properties plus my home.

After my initial purchase I like the idea so much I started working for the company whose seminar I initially went to. This gave me access to a wealth of experience from the owners of the company who had been involved in residential property investment for years. They taught me the benefits of solid research and sound investment principles. This has completely changed my financial situation. I am on track to financial freedom giving me options in life. I love property and I love showing others that they can do it too.

My interest in property has always been paramount, having descended from several generations of property investors. My Grandfather realised that in order to have a secure retirement living in a country where there was no form of government retirement annuities ie Africa, it was necessary for him to develop considerable property wealth as security for old age. This belief was adopted by my parents and from the age of a teenager, I decided that that would be my future as well.

Having moved to Australia in 2001 I studied various aspects of future prospects and decided that despite residing in a country where certain provisions are laid down by government it would not be sufficient to maintain a desired standard of living in ones retirement years (ie 80% retiring on less than $12000 per annum). My interest in property development came to the fore and having attended several seminars on investing in property I realized that this was definitely the way to go.

By 2004 I had purchased my first property in Queensland and had taken my first step in building my property portfolio. Within a few years I purchased my second property using the equity in my first. I was on my way. I intend to continue in this manner, expanding my portfolio and en route help others to create wealth in property and a future for themselves. Having taken the first step in investing in property, I am in a position today to realise the dream and to continue on this path.
